11-01-2020, 03:27 AM | #2 | Pentaxian | I use since years vuescan on my Nikon Super Coolscan 4000ED with no problems. I Think silverscan is a very good piece of software but a lot more expensive, than vuescan. The results are very good with both software. To try you maybe can download the Trial Versions. Vuescan is very easy to use, silverscan has a strong learning curve. Both are a lot faster than the old original Nikon software. |

In addition if Silverfast is bought bundled with a scanner the licence and usage is restricted to exactly only this scanner. For Vuescan you can purchase a lifetime license that covers different platforms (I think Mac, Windows, Linux) and you can use it with every scanner that is supported. I use it for may old flatbed scanner Epson Perfection 1650 Photo and the Reflecta ProScan 7200. You also can profile your scanner to get the best results. For such I purchased Wolff Faust targets years ago. I'm really happy with the scanning results of slides. |

I have used both on my Coolscan 5000 ED and prefer Nikon Scan.* As for editing capabilities, there are scan settings and post-scan tweaks. All three packages may be used to control the scanner with nods given to Silverfast for its profile support and to Nikon Scan for native Digital ICE. I would not use any of the three for post-scan edits. Steve * I am using a modified driver to allow compatibility to Win 7 and above. |

| My friend uses Vuescan. It is very capable and the one of the best things about it is the above mentioned licensing. |

11-03-2020, 09:42 PM | #9 | Site Supporter | I have had the plustek 7400 35mm scanner since 2010. It has worked great. Just need to run software as 32bit under Win10. Think same was true for Win7 too. Resolution, sharpness and colours seem pretty good to me. I really must get out the K1000 with some film and give film a bit of a go again. Learned much since start of DSLR era. Silverfast came bundled with this with software upgrades since purchase. |

Steve OSX 10.15+ (Catalina) no longer supports 32-bit compiled applications. So any old 32-bit apps needs to be updated. And if your driver/application is no longer supported, you're SOL. You need to maintain a legacy box (the Mini is a good choice) with an older version of OSX and preferably one that still has Firewire ports. |

I guess you can tell that I don't follow those things. The last Mac I had experience with purchased new was a Mini..dynamite little box. Steve |

Steve I picked up a 2012 Mini, installed a SSD drive , updated it to OSX Sierra 10.12, and surprisingly it boots up in about 10-12 seconds. I believe it's the last year of a Mini with Firewire. It's my devoted scanning box now. |
